ihearashadow

I hear a shadow
I hear a shadow
I hear a shadow
I witness a scream
I drink of this a poison Eucharist
Your blood your assimilation
Created for comfort
For convenience

These boundaries nurture ignorance
Finding meaning in nothing
This void fills the space
It fuels darkened cries
Listen to this eclipse rise
I hear a shadow
I hear a shadow
I hear a shadow

These sick rituals pass time
Awaiting this execution passes time
Gargle with glass
Awaiting this execution passes time
Withered icons cut veins
Drown in this pacification

Denial will only slow the process
It fuels darkened cries
Listen to this eclipse rise
Drink this essence of freedom

Venturi Effect, Incredible Hulk

The Hulk inspires. Period. As summer gloom settles in here in SF and it feels more and more like winter elsewhere, it's good to remember the warmth of late day light on the East Side after a long, intense day on the high lonesome.

Croft and Nettle's Venturi Effect has become the backcountry test piece, and with good reason. Rapping down the upper headwall reveals some of the most pristine rock anywhere. It feels light years away from where I'm sitting now, but these videos give all the more reason to keep training and dreaming big.

Don't Be Late: Bean Bowers RIP

The late Bean Bowers on St. Exupery, Fitz Roy Massif (Jvan Tresch photo)

I never met Bean Bowers, but the stories being shared in the wake of his passing make me feel his absence all the same. Each year brings another death within the tribe and with each death the reminder to cherish our partnerships, double-check our knots, and make the most of our time together.

Read Andrew McLean's tribute here.

A fundraiser to help defray the cost of Bean's cancer treatment and assist his wife can be found here.

A week in 'The Creek'

It was time: my grades were posted, gear was assembled, and much coffee had been brewed. All that stood between me and a care-free week in Indian Creek was a seemingly endless drive across I 80, the kind I've been swearing off the last few years. With the help of an audiobook version of Satanic Verses and an able-bodied co-pilot, we set off for what will hopefully become a new spring ritual; a new tribal rite.

What exactly has become of public art in Utah?

Heavy on the Freak Sauce: Rough Cut

Fifteen years ago, not knowing what I'd gotten myself into, I put out a book of flyer art from the Southern California hardcore punk scene, 1981-1991. Dozens of penpals contributed portions of their collections to the effort and Bruce Licher of Independent Project Press printed the covers. It sold moderately well despite a scathing review in Heart Attack and predated the exceptional Fucked Up and Photocopied by five years. The whole project was assembled by hand, literally cut and pasted together at my kitchen table, a fittingly crude but ephemeral protest against conventional desktop publishing. Here are the original pages, uncut and unadorned. Click on any image to enlarge. Enjoy.
