Biodiversity Mapping

Ever since discovering Edward Tufte's Envisioning Information came out I've rekindled my fascination with cartography, generally, and mapping, specifically. This illustration of global biodiversity really caught my eye. Keith Basso's Wisdom Sits In Places also has had a huge impact on my thinking and teaching, and this fall I'll revive the practice, myself, with a new group of newly arrived English Learners and seniors who've scarcely left the comforts of the Peninsula. As always, it'll be a treat and teach me as much as it does my students.

Memorial at Dorland and Guerrero

We never met, but the morning you set yourself on fire I saw you from afar, terrified, nearly naked in the street, bundled by passersby, you shook me to the core. Whatever compelled you to end your life that day must have been terrible beyond belief. Your private pain became public, and reminded me of all the work that still lies ahead. Find peace, stranger.

Another (long) day in the Palisades

Quick summary: 3 am start, accessing the northern stretch of the Palisades via Bishop Pass. Rick and I wore approach shoes the whole way and didn't rope up, though I volunteered to thread a cord for two other climbers on Thunderbolt and the Milk Bottle. We finished at Mt. Sill by 4pm, descending south into endless moraine fields, eventually winding our way back north. After 21 hours on the go we fell asleep back in the parking lot at South Lake.
